How to Decorate a Gender-Neutral Nursery

I'm so excited to reveal my gender-neutral nursery with you all!

At first, I had some trouble finding gender-neutral nursery decor that I loved, but I think it's finally finished. Mama's been nesting pretty seriously these days at 36 weeks pregnant!

I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that in a month or less, I'll be rocking our wiggly little newborn in this nursery. Sometimes when I'm feeling sentimental, I sit in the nursery and try to picture it. Soon enough she'll be here, and the room will never look this clean and organized again!

Choosing a Color Palette

Okay, disclaimer - technically this isn't a completely gender-neutral nursery. I did accent my nursery with a little bit of pink for baby girl, because I really couldn't help myself! But for the most part, I wanted to create a nursery with decor that could be used for future pregnancies, so I chose a simple, leafy green theme.

The leafy green aesthetic is a perfect option for gender-neutral nursery decor, as it's a popular print that's rather easy to find right now. I tend to lean toward muted colors, so sage green, tan, gray and white were the perfect color palette for baby girl's nursery.

In general, gray, tan, silver, gold and any other neutral color works well as a base color for your gender-neutral nursery. We painted every room the same warm gray when we moved in, which made for an ideal starting point.

Pro Tip: DON'T paint your nursery walls bright pink or blue.

I remember walking through bright pink bedrooms when we were house-hunting and thinking, "We have to paint over this!" I'd highly recommend starting with a neutral palette when it comes to wall color and accenting with curtains, bedding, and other accent decor in the room. Not only will it be so much easier to transition between children, but it will be so much better for your home's resale value as well.

When choosing your accent colors, you may choose to introduce some gendered colors, since these pieces can be easily removed in the future for other babies. I chose sage green as a base gender-neutral color for some of my more permanent pieces that I knew I wouldn't want to buy again. My curtains, crib sheets, and even some wall hangings followed this leafy green theme. Finally, I accented with pink on items like throw pillows, blankets, and a changing pad cover. We can swap these out for other colors if we have a boy down the road.

When It Comes to Decor, Less is More

Our nursery is a rather small room, so I had to be careful not to clutter the space with too much stuff.  The best method for decorating a small space is to start with your essentials first. What do you know you're going to need?

For us, this included a crib, dresser, and rocking chair, so we started with those items. We shopped around, took some measurements to make sure these items would fit into our space, and discussed where they'd fit best in the room. Also, we made sure that they weren't too "trendy" and that they would fit with any gender-neutral nursery decor we chose.

Once we picked out the basics and set them up how we liked them, we could finally add some simple decor. If you need window treatments, I'd recommend adding those next as they can quickly fill your space. Then add the items you know you'll need. For us, that was sheets, a diaper pail, a changing pad, any extra lighting, and storage. (Actually, since the room is so small, we ended up putting an old bookshelf inside the closet for toy, book, and supply storage! This was a great space-saver.)

At that point, there wasn't a lot of extra space to decorate - which is fine! Keeping things minimal is an excellent rule of thumb when it comes to decor. too much stuff clutters up a small space. We chose to decorate simply with some DIY wall hangings and a letterboard that can be edited whenever we want.

I love the way the sheets work with the art! They are so cute! And you will find you get enough pink toys and such to bring in a bit more pink as you go. Good luck!

I feel like the leafy theme is pretty easy to find right now! Maybe that makes it “trendy” which I try to avoid… then again, I’m pretty sure leaves will always be timeless 🙂
